Poem of the week 3/28/05

Pollen in the Wind

On the pulse of morning
at the cocks crow
whether summers rain
or winters snow
I miss you.
As the sun's trail
is lost at moonlight's feet
amidst rising tides
and unlit streets
I miss you.
Far gone beyond words
is the beauty of your smile.
The warmth of your heart and depth of your soul
made loving you worthwhile.
But now you're gone away from me
like pollen on the wind's heel.
Our love, which was once destiny
is now unrealized, is now unreal.
On the pulse of morning
while giving God his grace
I reminisce on love's past
hoping loneliness will I erase
I miss you.
As the leaves have fallen
riding abreast autumn's breeze
I hold still in my heart
the love we once conceived
I miss you.
What can I do to rediscover our world?
What keys can I use to break these lonely chains?
I'd give anything to salvage what remains
if your heart desires the same.
I miss you.
I miss you.
I
miss
you.

Vice, Vice, Baby

Nevermind the corny title, the idea here is to talk about vices. Now when I say vice, you can't hear me. . . . Okay, so I won't quit my day nor night job. At any rate, I don't mean cops. I mean that thing which we cling to for support. A vice can be an abstract or concrete thing which we look to for stability, inspiration, hope, etc. and feel that we can't function without it. For some people, religion is a vice. For others, money, alcohol, sex, or even the constant belittling of others. There is something in your life that you may use as a vice. What's my vice? My faith in God is one of my vices. Music is a big vice for me because when I want to feel a certain way, and need a little help, I turn on the radio or play a CD. There is something about music that allows me to attach to it, and change my emotions. What are some of your vices?

Poem of the week 3/21/05

Hub to Scrub

If this is the place
where you belong, then
why do I feel your body
next to me,
and your soul
away from me?
It seems to me that
your mind is on the other
side of town
and your frown in my presence
combined with your hesitance
to make love to me
tells me that you heart
is freely given to some
other brother from another
type thing that makes
your heart sing, eyes flutter,
and body shudder in orgasmic
rhythms that I used to feel.
I thought I had that whip appeal
until you turned my hand
to your back instead of your breast
to rub only, instead of beating up
that yoni, smothered in a snorkel pack
to keep the biscuits out of the oven.
A couple of dozen hand shakes
later provides temporary relief
but adds to the grief
of the reality of your disposition
with my affinity for several positions
positioned to enhance our intimacy
and preserve our fidelity,
but the bank of physical prosperity
seems to be bought out
and without a doubt
I have no clout.
No longer a platinum customer,
I'm treated like your average everyday buster.

Blame it on the rain

Everyone that I know can sing this song as well as Milli Vanilli although some may not remember this group. There is a lyric in this song that says, "Whatever you do, don't put the blame on you." How convenient. So who do we blame for their deception? They blamed their record execs, et al. Before you blow smoke and click out of this thread, its actually not about Milli Vanilli, or the weather, or even about lip synching (remember the tv contest?). Its about introspection. Introspection, according to the American Heritage Dictionary, is "contemplation of one's own thoughts, feelings, and sensations; self examination." Most people will tell you that they spend time examining their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, but when it comes to social interaction, the rain, does in fact, carry a heavy burden of blame. Have you ever blamed the rain, only to discover later that the raindrops came from your own head much to your chagrin? Can you handle examining yourself and acknowledging your own skeletons? We all have them, but when we allow those skeletons to exist unacknowledged, we deny our true selves, and stunt our own growth.

Poem of the week 3/14/05

Let's Duet

The brassy sound of
my trumpet rings
in my ears and my lips
are numb from the
creation of an essence of
pure love, pure soul
the purity of my heart
bleeding E's, F's and
G's please relax your mind
unwind and intertwine
your thoughts with my
music and let's explode
in a harmonious tone,
contrary motion, high pitch,
and strong delivery,
deliver me from the
basic triad that restricts
my natural inflections.
Jazz my mind and
free my soul, unfold my
400 metronome and cool me
like Miles supremely
in love's Trane.
No circle of more than two,
just me and you,
grandstaffing our wants,
needs, desires, passions,
action in each clef,
16ths and 32nds, cut time
or waltz, no falsetto nor
acapella. let's just
make music together.
Let's duet.

Changes

The world renowned late American ghetto poet known as Tupac released a posthumous song called "Changes". I thought of this song today when one of my students said that I was trying to act like someone that I am not. He stated that I don't act "black" because I dress up, try to speak properly and follow directions. He believes that anyone from the hood should act like they are from the hood. This type of mentality has always been one of my pet peeves. I can't stand it when ignorance abounds, especially in "black folks" as Tavis calls us. While as a people we needed a unified rallying cry to help us gain confidence in our ability to succeed in America, there were a select few, however anecdotal, who chose to prosper and succeed despite the odds facing them. I'm not talking about the 60's, but two centuries prior. William Alexander Liedesdorff was the first African American millionaire. There is a street named after him in San Francisco. Madam CJ Walker was the first female African American millionaire. Considering the value of money during the 1800s, a million dollars was not easy to make. So where am I going with this? Changes can be made within oneself despite the circumstances that one sees. You are and will be who you see in your mind, and not necessarily who you see in the mirror.

Toilet Seat Issue Resolved

Put the seat and the lid down. This way, your SO won't fall in, and both parties have to raise a portion of the seat. A more pressing issue is the use of the toothpaste tube. Most toothpaste boxes explicitly state, "Best results achieved if squeezed from the bottom". Why do some people still squeeze from the middle? It makes the tube a complete mess at the top. And eventually you will have to squeeze from the bottom because the top half of the tube is empty! I see why Albert Einstein only had one style of clothes that he wore simply stating, "I have no time to waste pondering such insignificant things." If the box or the tube says squeeze from the bottom, obviously some intern or fluoride engineer had nothing better to do than to study the effects of squeezing a tube of toothpaste. Since he or she has arrived at a conclusion, stop wasting your time pondering insignificant matters and squeeze from the bottom.

Driving idiots

If you're anything like me, you're one of NASCAR's undiscovered talents awaiting a phone call to show the world your driving prowess. You shuttle back and forth each day to work wondering why God allows so many idiots on the road. I once thought about writing my congressperson about having a moratorium on allowing idiots to drive anything. Unfortunately, we elected Bush, so that shows that the country actually favors idiots driving anything. At any rate, one of the biggest problems I have with DUI's (Driving Usually Idiotic) is the lost art of using the blinker. A blinker is a signal which alerts other drivers that you intend to switch lanes, or make a turn. Its intention is to help reduce the number of accidents. Sure, some people see a blinker and increase their speed instead of slowing down, but at least you see them coming. People, please use your blinkers.

The Golden Rule

"Do unto others as you would have them due unto you" is not a direct quote from the bible. Jesus says, "Love your neighbor as yourself". If this is a part of the greatest commandment, then why is it so hard for people to love others as they love themselves? Do we really know what that means? What if we hate ourselves or treat ourselves badly? Should we treat others the same? My personal view is that we should treat others better than we treat ourselves. Why? Because that is how we love ourselves. Think about it. When you treat yourself to an ice cream cone, movie, or anything that makes you feel good, did you deserve it? Of course you did because you looked beyond your faults and saw a need to feel good. You recognized your own needs despite whatever circumstances that you were dealing with. But when you look at other people, sometimes you feel that they receive things they don't deserve. Why? Because of the things they have done. What makes other people any different than yourself? This is an example of "putting the shoe on the other foot". Webster calls it "consideration". What do you think?
