Pretenders

Why do some people pretend to be more than they are? Why do some people pretend to know more than they actually do? Is there anyone out there who truly loves themselves enough to be content with their own shortcomings without the slightest hint of depression? Who is it that people are trying to impress, and why? I ask these questions to myself on a daily basis because I interact with people who put on these heirs daily. I don't think that it is out of the ordinary to question one's self, but to the point of wearing a facade for the benefit of others? I really don't care what others think about me, and I'm finding that line of thinking to be a rare breed. Now I may sound to some of you as if I'm arrogant or conceded, and I have been called that before. The bottom line is that pretending for other people is what actors get paid to do. Are you getting paid to put on a front for your family, friends, co-workers, et al? I didn't think so.

5 year old in handcuffs

By now you have heard, or seen the video of the little girl being handcuffed by police because of her unruly behavior. Now I think that there is no behavior that a 5 year old can exhibit that warrants being handcuffed, but I digress. What has happened to parents in America? Have we become like Bernie Mac says, "Punk-ass parents"? If my son or daughter acted out like that little girl, there would really be some "smoke in the city" because I don't tolerate that kind of acting out in my home or anywhere, and neither does my wife. We have to love our children, of course, but they need structure, or they will wind up living in a structurally sound edifice. I don't want my kids to end up in jail, so I'm doing my part. Are you doing yours?

Week of 4/18/05

What is going on with our children? I have had another student involved in a personal tragedy. She overdosed on drugs, and is currently in a hospital in a vegetative state, according to the sister. The student recently had a child, and expressed symptoms similar to Post Partum Depression. Now I don't believe my student to be like Andrea Yates, but once a woman has a child and experiences PPD, she is at risk each successive time she has children. So, there are two things to note in this thread, doing drugs is not a good vice for problems. One of my students recently said that doing drugs takes away the pains of life. I have to say that it does not! Any time you feel that you need drugs to cope with life, you are heading down a path of certain destruction. Secondly, if any woman that you know is pregnant, or has had a baby and seems to be acting strange, spend some additional time with them. PPD is not to be taken lightly.

Recent Events

Recently one of my former students committed suicide. She was an 18 year old female who happened to be homosexual. She often spoke about it, but said that she would not really do it. She had only ben out of school for four weeks. One month. Thirty days. If there is anyone out there reading these blogs, and you feel alone, or are having serious thoughts about suicide, seek help immediately. You are not alone. Here is a link in case that person is you:http://www.crisishotline.org/

Poem of the Week 4/4/05

Music of my Mind

Music of my mind
and my soul flows
through my mouth
and through my fingers
and in my ears,
and out my nose
all the way down to my toes
for I am music and music is me.

Music of my mind
like wet kisses
and a warm tongue
raises my body temperature
off of the scales
into the upper register
hell of a site for sore eyes
to see a man in musical ecstasy
in the perfect key
harmonizing to the mystic medley
of the Nite Trane

Music of my mind
that cool refreshing drink
and to think
it is the purest essence of the soul
conducive to that translucent energy flow
of passion . . .how romantic.
What manner of drug is this music
that winks the sleepless eye
at the lateness of the hour?
It is the music of my mind.

Pope John Paul II-In memory

Many of you know that the Pope passed recently while in Rome. The world has lost a great symbol of peace, hope, and love. I have never met the Pope, and am not Catholic, so I can only relate by thinking of people who have passed that I relate to, such as other famous persons or family. But rather than think about them, I'd like to use this thread as a memoriam for loved ones we have lost over years whom we hold still in our hearts. You don't need to know all of the information, simply a name will do.
